Company History
Excelda Manufacturing was founded in 1930. Excelda Manufacturing started as a dream in the 1920’s when automobiles were just beginning to be lacquered. Fred G. Coxen spent many evenings in his home developing the perfect auto polish cleaner. By 1930, Fred felt he had succeeded and Excelda Manufacturing was founded in a small facility in Ferndale, Michigan. As business expanded, Excelda needed to expand and moved into a larger building in the area in 1934.
By the 1940’s Excelda had established itself as a world force and was filling orders across the globe. When Pearl Harbor was hit in 1941, Excelda halted efforts to expand their civilian production and began providing vital chemicals to the United States Army. Fred G. Coxen received the Distinguished Service Medal for the company’s contributions during the war.
After the war, Excelda continued its expansion as Fred G.’s sons, Fred A. and Doug G. Coxen, took over the business growing the customer base to include companies such as Ford Motor Company, Hudson Motor Company, U.S. Rubber Company and Ohio Oil Company.
In 1966, Excelda introduced its new Star Luster line of products which included the Star Luster Used Car Reconditioning Polish. Star Luster quickly became well known for its superior quality.
Excelda’s commitment to quality remains a constant focus and the company has expanded to include their headquarters in Brighton, Michigan as well as facilities in Fowlerville, Michigan and Phoenix, Arizona. Our continuing goal is to produce quality products that exceed our customers’ expectations and to provide complete solutions at every step in the process.
